Their van broke down, the coaches meeting was missed, but the Chet Lemon School of Baseball Juice still squeezed a championship out of the Southeastern Invitational Tournament last month in Panama City.
Led by Bryan Chancellor, John DeLeon and Ryan Safford, among others, the Juice won its round-robin division, then roared through the medal round to win the tournament for 13- to 14-year-old players.
Mike Passilla, one of the coaches, said teams from Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Alabama competed on a Pony-sized diamond with 80-foot base paths and a 54-foot pitching mound. Teams were required to win their round robin, then compete in a four-team, single-elimination playoff.
Passilla said the team was part of Lemon's ''Maximizing your potential program'' and that the next event is an AAU tournament July 23-25 in Winter Springs' new Central Winds Park Complex off S.R. 434.
The team was comprised of players from Longwood, Orlando, Altamonte Springs, DeLand, Apopka and Sanford.
It took a 10-inning, 6-3 victory over previously unbeaten Sandy Plains, Ga., to win the round-robin thanks to a bases-loaded triple by Bryan Chancellor of Altamonte Springs.
In the championship playoffs, the Juice beat Jonesboro, Ga., 9-1, on a one-hitter by Ryan Safford of Longwood, then beat the favored Panama City A team, 13-4. Panama City had won 12 of the past 13 tournaments.
John DeLeon of Longwood, who hit three home runs and batted over .500, was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Tanner Brock, also of Longwood, was the winning pitcher in three games.
Joining DeLeon, Brock, Safford and Chancellor were Daniel Amat, Jeff Foldenauer and Juan Rojas of Longwood; Lee Bagley, Jamie Epperson, Brian Coates, Josh Dunlap, Michael Bradley, Dana D'Antona and Matt Wilbanks of Orlando; C3 Williams of Sanford; Robby Kenyon of DeLand; J.J. Depierro of Casselberry and Chris Harney of Apopka.
